Taffeta, Darling

/

Yeah, I took this picture in my car – so?

I had a good reason – I just can’t remember what it was. I think I was afraid it would be raining when I got home from work (it wasn’t). Well, whatever the reason – the lighting in my car was really good today.

This is Julep “Cally” from August’s “Muse Montreal” Collection – festival fuchsia iridescent chrome. I can’t resist a fuchsia. There’s the slightest hint of an orange shimmer – it reminds me of those color shifting Taffeta Prom Dresses from the 80s/90s…I never had one, but Seventeen Magazine was full of them.

This is two coats with Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat and “HK Girl”. The polish is thin, but gives great coverage.

I Fixed It!

I was so unhappy with my not-NEON nails…but instead of taking it off and starting over, I decided to make the best of a bad situation and experiment…

I started with OPI “Super Bass Shatter” on my thumb. (Yes, I own a Nicki Minaj Collection nail polish – wanna fight?) OPI makes the best shatter/crackle polishes and this one is the best of ALL. It looks AMAZING with the yellow. Next, I tried Julep “Shoshanna” on my index finger. The yellow holo glitter really brings out the NEON. I also used “Shoshanna” on my ring finger, underneath a coat of “Super Bass Shatter”. I used Julep “Rita” for polka dots on my middle finger – I love this finger the best! Finally, I went glittery with Orly “Bubbly Bombshell” on my pinky.

I finished all of my nails with another coat of “HK Girl”. So between the base coat, three coats of “The Bright Thing” and the toppers, there are 7-8 coats of polish on each of my nails. Either they will go a week without chipping, or I’ll try to take it off and it’ll take FOREVER.

I absolutely LOVE how my nails look now. All it took was a little fuchsia.

Lainey is Spelled Wrong

/

Don’t they know that’s NOT how you spell “Lane”??? Gosh.

I picked this polish because it is my sister’s name, even if it’s not spelled correctly…although she would never every wear this color. Julep “Lainey” is summer berry shimmer – but it looks fuchsia to me.

I used Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat with two coats of “Lainey”. I waited between coats, but there are still a few dratted bubbles! I topped with “HK Girl”.

Notice my little nubbins – usually I would have had a break by now, but the Biotin has made them strong. But I’m going fishing this weekend, so I’ve got to be prepared for baiting and gutting…

August Julep Maven Box – Muse Montreal Collection

/

Sooo…did you notice that I never posted a review of Julep’s July box? That’s because I didn’t fucking get it. I canceled my card because I suspected fraud (turns out it was a false alarm) and I figured I would get an email to remind me to change my card number, but I didn’t fucking get that either. Oh well. It’s fixed now…

August’s collection is called “Muse Montreal”, inspired by the Canadian city. The new beauty product this month is Skip the Brush Crème-to-Powder Blush Stick. I chose “Moonlit Sand”, a glittery taupe. For polishes, I chose Wonder Maven “Laure”blazing red-orange stardust – and Boho Glam “Cally”festival fuchsia iridescent chrome. I added on a few polishes from last month’s “Drenched” Collection – Wonder Maven “Lainey”summer berry shimmer – and Boho Glam “Magdalene”blue curacao shimmer. I also grabbed this month’s “Back from the Vault” shade – “Mila” – charcoal multi-colored glitter. Since I got three add-on’s, I got Wonder Maven “Lee”spitfire red crème – for free! I also got a set of “metal marks” – mini temporary tattoos. (Very similar to the ones in last month’s BB5.)

This month’s box also included as card to fill out and share what #BravePretty means to you. To me, it’s all about my daughter – she’s NEVER going to see me hesitate to put on a swimsuit and play with her because I’m afraid of how I’ll look. Maybe because I’m lazy, but never because I feel fat.

The Lace is On

/

Okay, I promise – this is the last one tonight.

Lily was again kind enough to let me borrow one of her polishes. This is essie “The Lace is On”, a polish I bought her a while back at Nordstrom Rack for $2.75. (She didn’t have to ask but once – it’s a lovely fuchsia.) The formula is perfect – 2 coats, no clumps or streaks.

I’m trying to use up all my random base coats, so I used Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat. I stuck with “HK Girl” for the top coat though – I use my other top coats on Lily – she chews off her polish within 48 hours, so it doesn’t really matter.

We are Living in a Material World

…and I am a Material Girl. I was totally bananas for Madonna in the 80s. Of all the accessories that I had as a kid, I wish I still had my ‘Boy Toy’ belt. Yeah, I was probably 7 or 8 at the time, singing “Like a Virgin”, wearing that ‘Boy Toy’ belt…pretty normal, I’d say.

This is Ulta “Material Girl”, a deep plum microglitter that shifts to fuchsia. (This isn’t the color I would expect for Material Girl – I would have expected a pink satin, like Madonna’s dress in the video?) I know I have enough fuchsia nail polish to paint the Astrodome, but I can’t NOT buy them. BUY ALL THE FUCHSIA!!!

I used Orly Bonder as the base coat, but I didn’t use a top coat – I can’t resist the fine, gritty texture. I find myself unconsciously stroking my fingernails throughout the day.  I wonder if I look like a psycho?

Cherry Juice

/

I’ve been scared of jellies for so long, but sometimes you just have to pull up your big girl britches and do it.

I was scared of how sheer and see-through they are…and how hard they are to apply. I never should have worried about that with Zoya “Paloma”a sheer deep fuchsia-berry with a buildable jelly gloss finish. FUCHSIA! It went on smoothly, without streaks. This is two coats and you can still see the nail line. It might take 3-4 coats to get absolute coverage. My one nitpick is that the polish immediately pulled away from the tips as I put on the top coat. I used Zoya Anchor and Zoya Armor, so next time I am going to try “HK Girl” to stop the dragging.

New Year, New Hue

I finally got my “New Year, New Hue” $15 Zoya deal in! Any three polishes for “free” with $15 shipping, plus 3 mystery minis that have never been available Retail. Zoya sure does have odd sales, but I’ll take it.

I picked out “Binx” – spicy orchid purple dappled with gold metallic and holo sparkles, “Lara” (finally, a polish with my name) – medium magenta-rose pink with subtle yellow undertone and a soft cream finish, and “Paloma” – sheer deep fuchsia-berry with a buildable jelly gloss finish. I totally pink-ed out.

My mystery minis were the Peter Som Collection from New York Fashion Week 2014“Anais” – black with a vein of the same warm pewter pigment running through it for a unique oil slick effect, “Severine” – warm pewter metallic, and “Charlotte”nude.

I’m gonna have some fun!

Déjà vu

/

Imagine that – wearing a birthstone polish in the correct month!

With all the polishes I have, I guess I shouldn’t repeat – but I just had to break out Julep “Betty” – Garnet for January again. Here’s what it looked like the first time…

This time, I used Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat – gotta have my nails last longer than 24 hours. I can’t believe how far I’ve come in the last year – base coats, top coats, nail art. I never would have tried that stuff before I started this site!

Noir Mi Amor

/

This is THE best PixieDust from Zoya – “Noir” Ultra PixieDust.

Zoya describes it as deep, vampy plum textured PixieDust with red Mega Hex particles…but I say it’s FUCHSIA.

Instead of starting with a naked nail, I started with a coat of Orly Bonder. It didn’t do shit, because after a round of pots & pans, I have significant edge wear on my right hand. Oh well, I was going to repaint tomorrow anyway.

C’est la vie.
