Gold a la Mode

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Light glitter is absolutely the best for going on a trip. It lasts well and hides tip wear. I had a short 2 days/1 night trip to Denver for work last week and this was my pic – Sinful Colors “Gold a la Mode” from the “Luxe Fragments” Collection. It’s a very yellowy gold – it reminds me of that Donald Trump idea of gold luxury – so much gold that it goes beyond luxurious and becomes tacky and ostentatious. Not that my nails looked tacky, but this much gold in say…a bathroom? Tacky as fuck.

This is two coats over Sinful Colors Base Coat and under “HK Girl”. It lasted well on my trip, but I noticed something odd. The polish began to darken at the tips of my nails and I have no idea why – al i did was sit in a conference room for two days. It began to look like ancient amber – it was weird, but kinda beautiful. I wish I had taken a pic!

Pavement

I wasn’t joking – as soon as I saw this polish, I had to try it.

This is Pretty Woman “I Can’t Deal” from this month’s ipsy bag. It’s a medium grey cream, the color of a freshly poured parking lot – no one’s parked in it yet and there are no oil stains.

I started with Sinful Colors Base Coat and got full coverage in just one coat. I went ahead and did two coats – just to be safe. The polish was super shiny on it’s own, but I finished with “HK Girl” – again, just to be safe. Safe from what – I do not know…but being safe seems really important to me right now.

Under Cover

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

After Boring Pink, I needed more excitement in my life…or at least more glitter.

I’ve got to be honest – my nails are still half stained from several polishes ago – I think it was Zoya “Bobbi”. So after Sinful Colors Base Coat, I painted a single coat of Sinful Colors “Social Ladder” to even out the color of my nails. THEN comes the glitter. I painted two coats of Sinful Colors “Under Cover”, from the “Camo Glitter” Collection. It’s baby pink, baby blue and black glitter with iridescent sparkles in a clear base. There were white little skulls, but I didn’t waste time fishing – if they ended up on my nails, fine. I finished with “HK Girl”.

The thing about black glitter over a light base – it just looks like I have ants crawling on my fingers.

Whiteout…with Glitter in it

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Look at this polish. Look closer. NO, closer.

Put your face up to the screen. Do you see that? No, it’s not whiteout with glitter in it. It might look white, but it is a pale purple with gold shimmer. This is beyond pastel – there’s the slightest bit of tint.

This is another one of those Kylie polishes – Sinful Colors “North Star” – from the “Trend Matters” Collection. I am inexplicably drawn to these matte polishes. The Sinful Colors matte polish formula is so good. It is the perfect consistency – not too thick and not too thin. Perfect, full coverage in just two coats. It sticks like glue to Sinful Colors Base Coat – I feel like I get a really long wear out of it.

I could have done a better job around the cuticle. Will I ever get better at dealing with my goddamn cuticles?

Target Twelve Days of Beauty Faves

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I’m playing a bit of catch up with December right now…or actually November. Yup, I ordered the Target Twelve Days of Beauty Faves Advent Calendar ($24.99) some time before Thanksgiving, although I waited until December 1st to start opening the windows. I meant to open one each day…but I kept forgetting and I had to hustle to open the very last window on December 31st.

Day 1: NYX Extreme Lip Cream in “Nude Peach Fuzz” (formula is great, but the color looks horrible on me – will be giving to my daughter)

Day 2: EcoTools Angled Kabuki Brush

Day 3: Sinful Colors “Silver Flash” (I don’t have this one!)

Day 4: Nexxus Comb Thru Finishing Mist

Day 5: ME! Bath Soap Bomb (I don’t have a bathtub in my new bathroom…meh.)

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Day 6: Pacifica Kale Detox Deep Cleaning Face Wash (At least I don’t have to eat the Kale.)

Day 7: Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (I absolutely HATE sticking my finger in lip balm. I just won’t do it.)

Day 8: Mayfair Soap Foundry Body Creme in “Sea Lily Jasmine”

Day 9: Pixi Glow Tonic (Not sure how this oil “exfoliates”, but I’ll bite.)

Day 10: ACURE Day Cream Gotu Kola Stem Cell + CGF

Day 11: Umberto Dry Lifting Powder (Nope.)

Day 12: Laneige Sleeping Mask (This is MY JAM.)

As of this writing, the set is still available – at a discounted price of $14.99. I would have been much happier to have paid $14.99 for the set, as there are at least 4 products that I won’t use and plan to give away. I feel it was overpriced for what was in the set, although I was very happy about the Pacifica, Acure and Laneige products.

Silver Synchronicity

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

What’s it called when several people, independent of each other, all come up with a similar idea? Synchronicity!

I was in a group text with my cousins, Jess and Beth, last week, and somehow, we all had gray nails on the brain. these are MY gray nails – Sinful Colors “Silver Slivers” from the “Luxe Fragments” Collection. The base is a pewter shimmer, with bright silver shards.

This is just two coats over Sinful Colors Base Coat and under “HK Girl”. It lasted very well.

Do you like the background? It’s the sequined makeup bag that came with the Victoria’s Secret Black Friday Tote. I’m loving the rainbow sequins – I want a polish that looks like this!

SO Violet

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I was digging in my “untrieds” box and I pulled out Jenna Hipp “Violet Eclair” from the bottom. I thought, “Why not?”

Oh my, this polish is oh so violet. Unlike the other Jenna Hipp polishes that I have, this one isn’t a pure creme – it has a flash of blue shimmer. The polish was thin and a bit streaky, but it was barely noticeable after two coats. This is two coats of “Violet Eclair” over Sinful Colors Base Coat and under “HK Girl”.

I need more purple in my life. I tend to set aside the purples and I don’t know why – they make me so happy once they’re on my fingers.

Candy Crush

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

So I was going for a candy cane vibe again, but more like the crushed candy canes that you find on the floorboard of your car after Xmas. Kids are fun like that.

This is not an overly original look – I did a Candy Cane Vibe last year using similar polishes. Again, I started with Sinful Colors Base Coat and two coats of Sinful Colors “Tokyo Pearl”. For the crushed look, I used Funky Fingers “Red Wedding”, which has multiple sizes of glitter, plus jagged chunks. That shit was sharp. Instead of a gradient, I did the whole nail. I sealed the deal with “HK Girl”.

I didn’t love the way this turned out. Something didn’t gel between “Tokyo Pearl” and “Red Wedding” – the surface ended up a bit pitted and cloudy, even with “HK Girl” topping it. I feel like Funky Fingers doesn’t like other polishes?

Shitstorm

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

To say that 2016 was a complete and utter shitstorm is a VAST understatement. Between politics, celebrity deaths and even the fucking weather – a complete, utter shitstorm.

To commemorate that shitstorm, I created these shitty nails, which actually are not shitty at all. I started with Sinful Colors Base Coat and two coats of Sinful Colors “Nirvana”, the dullest, doo-doo brown I have. I topped with another two coats of Funky Fingers “Olaf” – yup, still hard to fish those snowflakes out, but I got ’em. I topped with “HK Girl”. A few of the snowflakes were still sharp and bumpy, but they all stayed down until I removed the polish.

P.S. That’s not a real turd. It’s a fake one I got from Five Below.

Here’s to hoping that 2017 is at least slightly better than 2016. It won’t take much.

Son of a Nutcracker!

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Santa! I know him!

None of that in my house – this is the year that both of my children no longer believe in Santa Claus. It’s bittersweet. Relief that I no longer have to prolong the elaborate charade, but still it stings just a little bit. This was the last of the childhood lies to die. My kids never did the Tooth Fairy thing – they refused to give up their teeth (I blame Teen Titans, da da da da). The Easter Bunny game lasted until Mommy and Daddy forgot to hide the eggs one year. And this year, we buried Santa – 2016 really WAS the year of Celebrity Deaths.

I’m trying to stay festive though. This will probably be my most festive look this year. After Sinful Colors Base Coat, I alternated with two coats of Zoya “Bobbi” or Sinful Colors “Pine Away” on each nail. I topped with TWO thick coats of Funky Fingers “Son of a Nutcracker”. I topped again with “HK Girl”. Let me tell you, this was a BITCH to get off. And I forgot how much “Bobbi” stains your nails. Ugh.

I was so honored that my mother-in-law liked this combination so much that she borrowed the polishes. We were twinkies!
