Mermaid Magic

Upon my friend Angie’s advice, I decided to try a few different L.A. Colors polishes. I must say, I may have hit the mermaid jackpot.

I picked up a bottle of L.A. Colors Mermaid Magic in “Mermaid” a few weeks ago. At $1.98 at Walmart, how can you go wrong? “Mermaid” is an iridescent blue green with a gold shimmer. It is PERFECT.

This is two coats of “Mermaid” over Glisten & Glow Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat. I think it would be outstanding mattified as well.

I used it on my toes, to – I am rather impressed with the staying power.

Naughty Nudes

Oh, how the tables have turned.

When Walgreen’s carried Sinful Colors Nail Polish, I’d wait for the sales, hoping for 5/$5, but 3/$5 or 2/$3 were good, too. The sales were few and far between, but at least they still carried it…until now. Walgreen’s no longer carries Sinful Colors, but their main outlet is now Walmart. I’ve seen displays at HEB and Target, as well as buckets at Big Lots – but the new collections are dropping at Walmart.

I had to make an emergency cat litter work after work one night last week, so I made a reconnaissance run through the makeup aisle and there it was – the brand new Sinful Colors display, barely touched. I filled my carts with two full collections – the Naughty Nudes Collection and the Sinful Mattes Collection. 18 bottles of nail polish, rolling around in my cart. I looked for a bottle of Base Coat, but there wasn’t a space for it in the display – I’ve got to search for it. I passed on the new Sinful Shines, a bit pricey for me at $2.98 each.

Ultimately, only the Naughty Nudes ended up coming home with me. when I was checking out, the Sinful Mattes were also $2.98 each. I didn’t feel like spending another $30 on nail polish right this second – $17.82 is bad enough.

The Naughty Nudes Collection consists of (clockwise, starting with the lightest color at about eight o’clock) “Strike a Pose”, “Tease”, “Nakey Nay” (my personal favorite name), “Copper a Feel”, “Come Closer”, “Body Language”, “SkinTillating”, “Nude Mood”, and “Skinny Dip”.

I have regrets about skipping a few of the Sinful Shines, specifically “Poison Apple” and “Let’s Flamingle”. I need to go back…

Smouldrin’ Cauldron

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Not this past weekend, but the weekend before, I found myself in a rural Walmart after a family breakfast. While filling my cart with cheap Xmas decorations, I couldn’t resist throwing a few Halloween nail polishes into my basket as well…

This is Pure Ice “Smouldrin’ Cauldron”. It’s a gray jelly, with dark blue glitter and iridescent flakies. This is three thick coats, sandwiched between Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat and Glisten & Glow Top Coat. Even with a thick layer of top coat, it was scratchy and jagged – I kept snagging my nails on things.

Yes, these polishes are just $1.98, but they aren’t anywhere near as good as Sinful Colors. They are goopy, take forever to dry and chip quickly. I wore this polish for less than 24 hours before I had to scrub it off. Yuck.

Nail Fail

Never EVER trust a $3 Nail Art Set from Walmart.

I thought I would have a little fun last night, trying out some different nail art from the set I picked up from Walmart a few weeks ago. I was most excited to try the “caviar” – tiny beads that stick to the nail to form a beaded finish.

Let me first explain how HORRIBLE the polish included in the set is – thin and streaky – I couldn’t get good coverage of the light colors with 3+ coats.

I did each nail individually – painted, then chose a dip or decal to go with it.

/

The polish was so horrible that none of the dips would stick all the way. As you can see from the index finger on my left hand – the caviar wouldn’t even stick. The index finger on my right hand was supposed to be covered in diamond glitter, but it flew off my fingers every time I moved…it flew off my fingers like I was casting fairy spells. When I washed my hands, it all peeled off…leaving a leprous white surface. As a matter of fact – polish began peeling off of several of my fingers – just like that Tinkerbell polish we all used as kids…well that explained a lot.

/

The one part I liked about the kit was the cute little mustache decals. I will actually use those again – they went on smoothly and stayed put. A coat of Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat helped the hideous streaky polish…a little.

After an hour or so of  leaving various glitter trails all over the house, I finally gave up and took it all off. I was defeated…

After Xmas Haul

/

You know what’s better than Xmas shopping? After Xmas shopping!

On Friday night, we hit Walmart, in search of 75% off beauty sets, as seen on Nouveau Cheap. Although I did spy a few sets from Flower, Hard Candy and e.l.f. – they were all atrocious eye shadow and I passed. I did, however, find a Scinti Countdown to Christmas Gift Set – it’s like a nail art advent calendar. I really just wanted the little mustache nail decals. It ended up being $3.72, so not bad, even if it is a brand I’ve never heard of.

On Saturday night, I talked my BFF into a trip to Walgreen’s, again in search of clearance Xmas. Along with a shit-ton of Gift Tags, I found a Conair Ultimate Style and Volume Gift set for $5. I really only bought it for the bun maker thingy. I also picked up a Red Velvet revo and the most awesome thing ever – a dancing Xmas Tree that sings “Feliz Navidad”!

I think I made my BFF sad when I carried that fucking tree down every aisle, making it serenade all of the other shoppers. Shenanigans!

Does YOUR Husband do this?

/

All my training has paid off.

My husband went to Walmart today to pick up fishing gear and brought me back 3 clearance nail polishes ($1.97 each, but I have no idea what the usual price is). Seriously…who else has a husband like that?

I don’t have any experience with Pure Ice, but I’ve seen it before. The colors he brought me were (left to right) “Don’t You Wish”“Tame Me Now” and “Glass of Bordeau”. (Bordeaux was spelled wrong on the label – what do you expect from Wally World?)

Picture coming soon…I just used “Glass of Bordeau” on my toes…
