Vegas Nails, Take 4

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

And here’s the last of my $1.74 Ulta HaulChina Glaze “Ma-Holo at Me”.

“Ma-Holo at Me” is a slate blue holographic polish. I figured this is the perfect polish to get me through a trip to Las Vegas – shiny and will match ANYTHING.

Sure, this polish looks nice NOW, but the application was SO problematic. I started with Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat. The first coat was super streaky, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that each brush stroke made the polish glob onto the previous brush stroke and left weird bald spots. I did the best I could to get a thin, even first coat. The second coat was slightly better, filling in some of the bald streaks, but not all of them. It was SO weird. Without the top coat, the polish was somewhat matte. If I wasn’t going a week without changing my polish, I might have tried it out. Luckily, Glisten & Glow Top Coat is very, VERY forgiving and his most of the bald spots and flaws. My nails ended up looking so much better than they should have.

I’ll be going on hiatus for a week or so while on vacation. Enjoy this spiffy new WordPress theme while I’m out. Vaya con dios!

Don’t Be Sea Salty

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

All the flavors in the world…and you chose to be salty?

This polish is actual the opposite of salty – it’s so, so sweet. China Glaze “Don’t be Sea Salty” is a finish you don’t see very often – it’s a plastic-y matte shimmer. The shimmer is very, very subtle – but it’s there.

This is two coats of “Don’t be Sea Salty” over Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat.

Like most matte polishes, the edges wore VERY quickly – no top coat. Even so, it lasted at least a day or so longer than the usual 2 days before looking like total shit. This one is definitely a keeper.

Let’s Have a KIKI!

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I wanna have a kiki…lock the doors TIGHT.

That’s right, I only bought China Glaze “Kiki in our Tiki” because of the name. I don’t normally gravitate towards orangey polishes, but for $1.74 – why not?

At full price (usually $7.50), I usually don’t bother with China Glaze polishes…but when they are on sale, I snatch them up. China Glaze is usually good quality, with large bottles…even if the names are cringey puns. How can you even have a kiki inside of a tiki? Maybe if they mean a tiki hut? Ugh, at least it’s not “Keke, do you love me?”

This is two coats of “Kiki in our Tiki” over Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

No 45

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I can always count on ipsy to introduce me to to new brands of nail polish – Sundays “No 45” arrived in this month’s bag.

Sundays is a New York Salon that creates 10-free and vegan nail polish. I used to polishes declaring themselves as 3-free and 5-free, even 8-free like Butter London…but 10-free is a new one. 10-free polishes are formulated without dibutyl phthalate, TPHP, toluene, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, camphor, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, parabens, and tert-butyl hydroperoxide.

Can we talk about this perfect baby blue? Even though it was streaky as hell on the first coat, the second coat was perfect. This is two cats above Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

I would want more…but I checked their website and these polishes are $18 a pop…um, NOPE.

July 2018 Ipsy Bag – July 2018

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I am a bit weirded out that ipsy’s theme for this month is just “July 2018”. Did they run out of ideas or some shit?

I feel like I just got Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder. Well, not “just” – but back in my October Sephora Play!

Also in this month’s bag – Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Peppermint Oil Cooling Jelly Conditioner (I am curious about how this one feels – tingly?); The Organic Pharmacy Hand Cream in “Marigold & Comfrey” (what is comfrey?); Sundays Nail Polish in “No 45” (new brand with fancy looking branding); and City Color Cosmetics City Chic Eyeshadow in “Skinny Latte”.

I wanna move all my swimming/water park supplies (contact fluid/case, lip balm, extra hair ties, etc.) into this cute aqua bag – it’s perfect!

Sprite Can

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Are you sensing a theme here?

July’s Julep polishes are just so…juicy! Julep “Maynette” reminds me of a Sprite Can. I don’t drink much Sprite, and if I’m going to drink a clear lemon-lime soda, it’s usually 7-up. I won’t argue though that Sprite has the prettiest can.

This is two coats of “Maynette” over Julep Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat. The duochrome has a gold shift – can you see it?

Also, what kind of name is Maynette? It’s an astronaut name, that’s what kind it is!

The Hottest Pink

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Oh, their website says that Julep “Raleigh” is the hottest pink shimmer, huh? Well…they are absolutely right! “Raleigh” just might be the hottest of the hot pinks that I own.

I started with Julep Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat, then two coats of “Raleigh”. “Raleigh” had a dreamy consistency, not too thick and not too thin. It’s got a super-dense shimmer and gave full coverage with no VNL in two coats. I finished with Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

It’s not me at all, but I’ve really been into hot pinks this summer, especially on my toes. I usually go for a mermaid-y blue/green look, but I guess I’ve turned over a new leaf, er, petal.

Disco Limeade

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Oh, Mylanta!

Julep “Tazi” is like a Discoball dipped in limeade – it’s iridescent AND holographic. Can you see the purplish holographic shimmer?

This is two coats of “Tazi” over Julep Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat. It’s truly flawless.

I think I need to match up “Tazi” and “Sam” – what do you think?

July 2018 Julep Maven Box – Welcome to the Jungle

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

July’s Julep Maven Collection is full of bright and amazing jungle colors – they’d be right at home on a Hawaiian shirt or a fun beach towel.

This month’s beauty product was a Body Cleansing Oil, so I decided to pass and pick three polishes. I’ve dabbled in facial oils with varying results, but I cannot imagine rubbing my entire body down with oil and feeling “clean” afterwards.

I picked It Girl “Tazi” – iridescent lime holographic, Wonder Maven “Raleigh”hottest pink shimmer (hottest? really?), and Boho Glam “Maynette”palm frond duochrome. (Did you know that Maynette is the name of an astronaut?)

Oh. and I was supposed to get some more nail decals with this box – nope, they didn’t make it into the box. Boo! Hiss!

I should just stop expecting candy – Julep is not giving us any more candy, are they?

Not a Julep Maven? Click HERE to join – I’ll get a $15 credit and you’ll get your first box free!

Pony Sia

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

For Xmas, I think, I got my daughter the China Glaze My Little Pony Songbird Serenade Set. I had forgotten about it…until now.

Songbird Serenade is the name of Sia’s rock star pony in the My Little Pony movie. I’ve managed to avoid watching it…so far. I know my days are numbered once it hits cable. The black sparkly polish is the titular “Songbird Serenade” and the gold chrome polish is “Best Ponies Forever”. I feel like a Sia Pony wearing these polishes together.

This is two coats on each nail, over Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat.
