January Julep Maven Box – Future Fresh

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

New year, new subscription boxes! Well, technically not new…I’ve been getting Julep boxes for over three years now and I still love them as much as ever.

January’s box is “Future Fresh”. Honestly, I haven’t jumped on the oil bandwagon, but I took a chance in selecting Julep’s Boost Your Radiance Reparative Rosehip Seed Facial Oil. I’ve been using it semi-consistently for the last 5-6 days. I don’t know that I’ve noticed a difference in my skin –  was already in the middle of a mid-winter skin freakout. (I’m thinking that the breakout was overcompensation from trying to combat dry, winter skin.) I don’t know that my skin is more radiant, but I do feel like the oil has a skin blurring effect. Best of all, it smells absolutely DIVINE. I am in love with the romantic rose/bergamot scent, although it is almost too hippy for me.

For polishes, I chose It Girl “Darcy” – Baja Sunrise Sheer Iridescent Shimmer – and Wonder Maven “Pacita” – Honey Ginger Sheer Iridescent Shimmer. Yup, two sheer shimmer polishes – they’re radiant. Oh, and they sent me a Tootsie Roll Pop. Ugh, all that licking.

New Years, New Nails

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I decided to ring in the new year with totally glam nails. That…and I had no idea what I was going to wear. So I went neutral.

Julep “Judy” is moonbeam iridescent chrome. It was from one of the Mystery Boxes I got over the summer. It’s gold, but it’s silver, but it’s pearl?

After Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat, I did two quick coats of “Judy” and topped with “HK Girl”. It was a good consistency and was quite smooth, even before the top coat. I love light polishes like this – they don’t show edge wear, so all that New Year’s dishwashing looks like it NEVER HAPPENED.

December Julep Maven Box – This Way to the Soiree

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Oh hi, Julep – nice to see you so early this month.

“This Way to the Soiree” is December’s theme. They brought back It’s Whipped Matte Lip Mousse as the featured beauty product. I picked one of the new shades – “Swoon”, Heathered Wine Matte.

For polishes, I chose Boho Glam “Bree”Golden Gardenia Multidimensional Glitter (Gardenias are white?), and It Girl “Kristjana”Sweet Plum Holographic (this will look amazing with the lipstick). This month’s treat made me gag – a green apple Gilliam Candy Cane. I fucking HATE green apple.

Oh Lord, Won’t You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends…

Not really – I actually don’t know anyone who drives a Porsche – or a Mercedes Benz, for that matter. I do have a few friends that drive BMWs, but I have forgiven them.

Julep “Mercedes” has a unique finish – described as “canyon rose metallic” – it’s like a mixture of copper, gold and silver pigments that haven’t quite mixed all the way. It looks a bit like a glitter, but it’s not a glitter at all – it’s completely smooth.

This is two coats with Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat, finished with “HK Girl”.

I wonder if I’ll ever get me a night out on the town?

Carrie Ann

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

There are lots of holographic polishes coming out right now, but this is the first sheer holographic polish that I’ve come across.

Julep “Carrie Ann” is described as blush sheer holographic – it leans a bit too pink to be a true nude, but it is “nudish”. The holographic shift leans gold, which is a welcome change from the usual silver or rainbow shift.

I started with Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat. I did a sloppy job on the second coat – tired – so I have extra crispy edged around my nail beds. Amateur mistake. Even though I used “HK Girl” to protect my nails, my nails couldn’t stand up to dishes and toilet cleaning on Saturday. Alas, I wore this polish less than 48 hours.

November Julep Maven Box – Light & Shadow

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

It’s Julep time!

This month’s “Light & Shadow” theme brings a range of colors and finishes. For polishes, I chose Classic with a Twist “Carrie Ann”, blush sheer holographic, and It Girl “Mercedes”, canyon rose metallic (what’s a canyon rose?). Both gave me a Thanksgiving vibe – perfect for November. For my beauty product, I chose a new shade of Eyeshadow 101 Creme-to-Powder Eyeshadow Stick – “Burgundy Shimmer”. I have high hopes for upping my game on lazy makeup days (basically, when I hit snooze too many times).

I used Jules to get another Oxygen Bonding Base Coat. It really DOES make a difference with Julep polishes – less bubbles and it sticks so much better.

The treat in my box was a single chocolate ball. I just popped it my mouth – not bad, better than Hershey. Why only one?

Ebony and…

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

So many Halloween polishes, so little October…

I got Julep “Ebony” in this month’s Julep Box – yes, another holographic – graphite holographic. If a Number Two pencil was filled with unicorn farts…I just can’t get enough of holographics right now.

After Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat, I slapped on two quick coats of “Ebony” – it went on like a dream. I topped with “HK Girl”.

This polish lasted for-fucking-ever – no chips. It might have been the only thing holding my nails together – as soon as I took it off, I had to cut my nails down to nubs. They’ve been so abused lately, the tips were in danger of peeling, so I had to cut them to save them. Sigh. Nubbies again.

Genevieve

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Julep “Genevieve” is one of those forever polishes – it lasts and lasts. Good thing, too – I was sick as a dog for the last three days and mostly bedridden. It got to the point that I googled “zika symptoms” – I thought maybe I was dying.

Spoiler alert, I didn’t have any of the symptoms. Turns out it was just a super-nasty case of bronchitis.

Anywho, “Genevieve” is an eye catching chrome, reminiscent of red clay – but shiny. This is two coats over Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat. It was shiny on it’s own, but I topped with “HK Girl”, which made it practically invincible.

I felt much better today – I took off “Genevieve” and trimmed my nails. Another polish coming soon…

October Julep Maven Box – Dark and Stormy Nights

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Oooooh! More Halloween polishes!

Julep’s October theme is “Dark and Stormy Nights” and the polishes are dark and foreboding. I picked Boho Glam “Skylla” (black coffee ghost shimmer) and It Girl “Ebony” (graphite holographic). All Mavens also got a free bonus polish – It Girl “Desiree” (high-gloss holographic top coat). I’m ready to rock some dark and stormy nails.

I also picked another Night Shift Deep Sleep Facial Maskthe one I got last October is almost gone. I use it a couple of times a week and I love using it after using my Clarisonic and Love Your Bare Face Cleansing Stick.

No candy or treat this month – what’s up with that?

Pining for the Fjords

A photo posted by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Julep “Acacia” has me pining for the fjords. (Or maybe I just feel like I’m dead because of this sinus infection?)

I’m pining because Julep describes “Acacia” as blue fjord chrome – I was like huh? Then I had to google fjords – I was thinking that the tall cliffs themselves where the fjords, but technically, the fjord is the water-filled inlet. Well fuck – my whole life is a lie…or at least the geography part.

“Acacia” is a true one-coat polish – I really could have gotten away with just one coat…but the perfectionist in me required two coats – just to be sure. For some odd reason, I got bubble…in the base coat. I used Julep Oxygen Bonding Base Coat and I’ve never seem that bubble before. A few of the bubbles were visible through the two coats of “Acacia” and “HK Girl” – I don’t know what’s up with that. Am I going to have to get all anal and start using alcohol wipes on my nails before painting?

I also used “Acacia” on my toes. I had promised my husband “Danica” on my toes, but I decided that he gets “Acacia” instead. He LOVES blue toenails.

This is it – I am all caught up…I think. This is the color on my nails RIGHT NOW. Aw shit, I still have one more subscription box sitting on the counter…
