The Rusty Trombone

/

Behold…THE RUSTY TROMBONE.

If you don’t know what a Rusty Trombone is, I am not going to be the one to tell you. Go ask your kid or something, you old fuddy duddy.

There are many layers to this manicure. The first layer is Sally Hansen Nail Prisms in “Amber Ruby.” It was the closest thing to rust that I had. The second coat is Julep “Glenda” – a creamy silver crackle. Since trombones are usually made of brass, I used Milani 3D Holographic “510” as the third layer. (WTF Milani?)

After 3 coats, my nails were super gooey, so I topped with a coat of Sally Hansen “Diamond Flash Quick Drying Topcoat.” It’s been over 5 hours and I don’t feel like the polish has cured. Hmmm…this rusty trombone might not last long…

Glitter Tips

/

So Erin requested “Glitter Tips”…

I started with a base coat of Julep “Kristy” – an inky midnight blue/black. Seriously, this stuff reminds me of the India Ink I used for my first tattoo. I wore it for a day and decided to jazz it up by adding glitter tips in Sally Hansen “Mermaid’s Tail.”

I had the bright idea of using blue painter’s tape to make a clean line for the tips. That was probably overkill…next time, I’ll try painting it freehand. Of course, the painter’s tape left a clean line – a little too clean, so I put a coat of Sally Hansen Diamond Flash Topcoat over it to smooth things out.

All in all, I’m happy with the result…I feel all fancy and shit.

Valentine’s Toes

/

Super bowl, shmooper bowl…aren’t my toes cute?

I took a cue from Lily and picked a handful of pinks for my toes…Clockwise from the top: OPI “Animal-istic” (from  their Muppets Collection), Sally Hansen “Hot Magenta”, Revlon Top Speed “Candy”, Sally Hansen “Strobe Flash” (top coat), Sally Hansen “Posh Plum” and China Glaze “Caribbean Temptation”.

I wish it was sandals weather already…

Also…taking pictures of your toes is hard when you’re 6’1. I had to almost get into a pretzel shape.

Lily’s Choice

/

Since I only have 20 nails of my own to paint, I have co-opted my daughter Lily’s digits for my experiments. I recently picked up a couple of new Sally Hansen glitter dots at Target for 68 cents, so I had Lily pick out colors to go underneath. She chose Sally Hansen “Hot Magenta” and Hard Candy “Scam” to go underneath Sally Hansen “Green Rocket.” The results are nice…for a five year old, she’s got great color instincts.

I know many nail purists roll their eyes at any product that can be bought at mega-stores like Target, but I have always had good results with Sally Hansen…and it’s relatively cheap.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that I now finish all of Lily’s paint jobs with Ta-Da Quick Dry Drops by Julep. A must have, unless you like fingernail polish all over your carpet…
