April Julep Maven Box – The Paradise Collection

I got my Julep Maven Box on Friday (Yay for quick shipping!), but I have been so busy with Easter festivities that I hadn’t had time to post it.

April is “The Paradise Collection” – colors like a bright tropical bouquet. This month’s beauty product is “Don’t Leave Your Brows at Home” – a two-in-one tool includes brow powder and an angled brush. Even though I love my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, I’m excited to try it. I got “Cool Brown”. For polishes, I picked It Girl “Danielle” and Bombshell “Cassidy”. I normally wouldn’t have picked 2 blues, but I kept thinking about my Cuz’s little girl Cassidy – so I had to have it! For an Easter treat, my box had a little bag of Everlasting Gobstoppers – one of my favorites!

I just did my toes and nails in “Danielle” – pics tomorrow!

Cadbury Mini Eggs

Cadbury Mini Eggs – that is what my nails look like!

I tried out Julep “Kimberly” last summer, and I thought to myself that I would pull it out next Easter – I am shocked that I remembered. Last time, I left it shiny, but I decided to use Zoya Matte Velvet Top Coat. Matte is SO much better suited to this polish.

“Kimberly” stuck well to Orly Bonder and I didn’t have any crinkles like I did last time. I’m getting pretty good at this…

NO MORE PURPLE – I’m purpled out.

Sometimes polishes on your nails don’t look anything like they look in the bottle.

This is Julep “Aretha” – Aquamarine for March. It looks so blue in the bottle, but it’s NOT blue on my nails. It’s almost like crushed opals.

“Aretha” is reasonably dense, but doesn’t fully mask my yellowy stained nails – damn that green polish. This is two coats of “Aretha” over Orly Bonder.

Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone

/

I decided to “jazz up” Julep “Janet” with some glitter dots in essie Luxeffects “A Cut Above”. I just can’t leave well enough alone.

I should have guessed that dotting tools wouldn’t work well with glitter polishes. The glitter just gooped up and got sticky almost immediately.

Although I may have failed in execution, I really like these two polishes together. It doesn’t look horrible, but you should see my other hand…

Dammit Janet

/

Julep “Janet” was my sole polish choice for the March box. An “It Girl” polish, Julep’s site describes it as pale peach soft focus (semi-matte). It’s similar to an eggshell finish house paint – not glossy and not flat. It’s much more classy than I am – I feel like a hand model in a wedding ring ad. “A diamond is forever” and all that jazz.

I used Sinful Colors Base Coat. A few of my nails peeled – can you tell on my middle finger?

You know what it reminds me of? Silly Putty! It’s soft like Silly Putty, too. I woke up with cross-hatch indentations on my nails. Aw, dammit Janet!

March Julep Maven Box – The POP! Collection

/

I was all ready to start bitching about slower shipping this month, then I was like, “DUH. February is a short month.”

“The POP! Collection” is March’s theme. Lots of creamy spring colors. I totally customized my box this month. I picked Light on Your Lips lip color in “Primp” (it’s a Marsala-ish neutral; I tried it today and it was very, very dry, but ti stayed put until I had to put lip balm on), Get in Line invisible lip liner (I also tried it today and didn’t notice much; I need to try with my Benetint, which bled all over my face yesterday) and It Girl “Janet”, one of their new Soft Focus Finish polishes. I used Jules to add Ctrl-Z Makeup Eraser to my box – will this be the product that finally ends my games of eyeliner chicken???

I am really tempted to get the Lucky Mystery Box…I haven’t decided yet. I haven’t gotten a Mystery Box since the Golden Ticket Mystery Box last May. I am verklempt! I really want to name my own polish though…

Rosa Naked

/

So I totally forgot that Julep “Rosa” – Amethyst for February has a clear base. I thought it was darker, but I had forgotten that I had used another color underneath it. Hmmm…it decided to shrink away from the tips. Now it looks like I don’t know how to paint my nails. I even used Orly Bonder to make sure it stuck.

What the fuck?

So Cute I Could Puke

My nails are so cute…they make me wanna puke. Look at those hearts – gross!

After Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat, I used two different polishes – Julep “Lindy” on my thumb and ring finger and Julep “Carol”. I thought you would be able to tell the difference between “Lindy” and “Carol” – “Lindy” has shimmery flakies and “Carol” is a sheer jelly – but they look almost exactly the same when topped with Julep “Hartleigh”.

Julep got it right with “Hartleigh”. I had no problem getting the hearts on my nails – the bottle was packed! I got eat least two hearts on each nail and three on a few of them. It also wasn’t all goopy like “America”.

I topped with “HK Girl” to give those hearts extra security. Those suckers aren’t coming off unless I use sandpaper.

At least this Valentine’s Day is preceded by a Friday the 13th…I have that to look forward to.

Genius Idea

/

So…I LOVE the “Swatch Me” stickers that come on top of Julep polishes. Those stickers make it a snap to find the polish in seconds, instead of having to dump my Color Caddy to find what I’m looking for. True – Julep does sell those stickers, but they’re hella expensive. What’s a girl to do?

A girl goes to Office Depot and spends $6.99 for a pack of 1,100 5/16 x 1/2 inch labels instead!

I really tried to find round labels, but they didn’t have any white ones that were small enough. I kind of like the rectangular ones though – they give the polish enough room to spread. They work great on the flat tops of bottles, but they don’t work so well on bottles that have a slight rounding to the top (Rimmel London). They also aren’t working great on bottles that have a raised imprint on the top of the bottle (OPI, Nicole by OPI, China Glaze, Sinful Colors), because the stickers are not sticky enough. I might have to use clear tape to keep them on.

I’ve gotten through about 200 polishes so far – a little over 2/3 done. I’ve actually never counted my polishes, so I guess that means I have 350+. I’m not stopping til I hit at least 1,000.

Flakies!

/

Look at those flakies! Iridescent flakies AND glitter.

This is Sally Hansen Triple Shine “Scale Up” over 2 days old Julep “Elise”. The flakies seem to take on the color of the polish underneath – I should try it over a red or a pink…

One note about Julep “Elise” – it’s a staining son of a bitch. I used Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat, so my nails were protected for the most part – except the edges and my cuticles. I managed to get most of it off with Julep Vanish, but I’ll be wearing blue and green polishes until it wears off.
