Rose Flush

So, I’m still working on my National Nail Polish Day haul…

This is Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Matte in “Rose Flush”. “Rose Flush” is a peachy rose gold polish, with a matte finish. It reminds me of NARS “Orgasm”.

I started with Sally Hansen Double Duty Base & Top Coat and then two coats of “Rose Flush”…and NO top coat! The polish lasted just fine without the top coat, but since it was generally neutral, the chips blended in.

Reflection Pool

Oh hey, What do you think of Sally Hansen Color Therapy “Reflection Pool”? It’s pretty tight. It’s a shimmery teal, with a hint of purple.

I am SOLD on the Sally Hansen Color Therapy (with Argan Oil) formula – this is one of the nicest polish formulas I’ve ever used. The perfect consistency – not too thick or too thin – and it self-levels like a dream. No drag marks, no bubbles. I wish it was a little bit cheaper – this baby was $6.79 – and some shades are $7.99 – almost OPI prices!

This is two coats over Glisten & Glow Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

I also did my toes – perfect for pool time. Only problem – I need a (closer) friend with a pool.

National Nail Polish Day

Did you know that June 1st is National Nail Polish Day? Me either! Even though it sounds like a totally made up holiday, I am willing to play along since Target offered 25% off on nail products that day. I was too lazy to go there in person, so I placed an online order…

The first one I added was OPI “Tutti Frutti Tonga”, on clearance for $2.84. I also added essie “Blue-Tiful Horizon” ($6.59), which is a stunning periwinkle blue with a pink flash.

Target was also had a deal offering a $5 gift card with the purchase of 3 Sally Hansen polishes. I jumped on that deal. I picked up Sally Hansen Insta-Dri “Rose Flush” ($3.99) and two of the Color Therapy polishes – “Reflection Pool” ($6.79) and “Burnished Bronze” ($7.99). I haven’t tried the Color Therapy formula, but I’ve read that it is REALLY good.

So with my 25% off + %5 off with my Target Red Card + $3 off $15 from last month’s Target Beauty Box + free shipping, my order total was $21.61 for five polishes. The $5 gift card (which I just used towards a new Mr. Coffee) brings the total down to ~$15 for five polishes. Not bad, if I do say so myself!

Tutti Fucking Fruitti

“Don’t you NEVER turn your back on a fuckin’ clown when he’s talkin’ to you!” Whoops, wrong website…although this IS kind of a clown polish.

I am fucking obsessed with this polish, clowns or not. This is Sally Hansen Insta-Dri “Tutti-Fruitti” from the Sally Hansen x Jelly Belly Collaboration. I don’t know how they made a polish look like a jelly bean, but they fucking did. I don’t even know that I know what tutti fruitti even tastes like – generic fake fruit flavor?

This is two coats of “Tutti-Fruitti” over Glisten & Glow Base Coat and under Glisten & Glow Matte Top Coat. The matte top coat muted a glitters a bit and made it look like a jelly bean.

I wish I had picked this polish up for Easter – it would’ve been PERFECT!

Triple Freebie Haul

Not 10 minutes after I placed that last Sephora order, I placed this Ulta order…I had kept adding things to my shopping cart over the past month and when the freebies were just right…I made my move.

The biggest part of my haul was Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and Conditioner (regularly $20 each, on sale 2/$24). I’d samples this duo a few months ago at my sister’s house – it made my hair feel amazing! The price has held me back – even on sale, this is the most expensive shampoo/conditioner I’ve purchased yet. I’m going to give it a trial before switching for good…

I had sworn off Nair when I was 15 – I tried it once and it made me look like I had leg measles and didn’t melt the hair off. I was swayed by a new product – Nair Charcoal Brighten & Smooth Leg Mask ($11.99). I tested a large patch on my shin and it actually worked this time. I left it on for the 10 minutes recommended and it actually worked on me – I was shocked. It still smells like burning diapers, but it didn’t give me a rash. I am trying my entire leg in a few days – fingers crossed.

I also tried a new deodorant – Meow Meow Tweet Grapefruit Baking Soda Free Deodorant Stick ($14). I know, I know – I’ve scoffed at fancy hippy deodorants for years…but I’d noticed periodic rashes from regular antiperspirants over the last few years, and since my surgery, I’d stopped using them almost altogether. I live in Texas though – I probably should use something. I’ve been using the Meow Meow Tweet and I feel like is working at repelling odor – but it doesn’t stop my pits from getting moist. I may have to start alternating with an antiperspirant to see if that helps.

I’ve been eyeing the Sally Hansen x Jelly Belly collaboration for a while and finally decided to pick up the Sally Hansen Insta Dri x Jelly Belly Nail Color Duo Pack with “Berry Blue” and “Tutti Fruiti” ($7.99).

Ulta was offering a free 3 piece gift with $19.50 purchase – a huge Beach Bag, a Matte Bronzer, and Lip Plumping Transforming Top Coat. I am paranoid about going without eyebrows, so I got a back-up Ulta Ultra Slim Brow Pencil in “Dark Brown” ($10). I also snagged the Mercury in Retrograde 5 Piece Rose Quartz Look Book ($16). I got the set solely based on a lyric from the song “Wasted Youth” by Jenny Lewis – the line about “Mercury in Retrograde” has been in my head for weeks. (The whole album “On the Line” is amazing – you should check it out.) The kit includes Confidence Boost Facial Mist, Be-You-Tiful Cream Eyeshadow (light pink shadow with shimmer), Self Love Lip Crayon (creamy, rosy pink), Crystal Blush (rosy-toned pearl blush), and Rose Quartz Face Gems (54 count). The blush is my favorite part, but I was pleasantly surprised by the cream eyeshadow.

And the freebies…I got a Glow All Day 5 Piece Sampler with my $65 purchase: Murad Resurgence Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel; Peter Thomas Roth Potent-C Bright & Plump Moisturizer; Derma e Vitamin C Concentrated Serum; Boscia Matcha Magic Super-Antioxidant Mask; and Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Power Serum. I got a Step Up 7 Piece Sampler with my $75 purchase: Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels; Botanics Hydration Burst Sheet Mask; Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Creme; Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion; Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair; I Dew Care Cake My Day Hydrating Sprinkle Wash-Off Mask; and First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Face Cleanser. My skin is going to feel FANTASTIC!

Looks like this haul made me Platinum for 2020 – just $733 to Diamond status. I also am up to $53 in points…hmmmm, what do I want to buy???

Monsty Skin

…and back to our regularly scheduled nails.

Pretend it’s October still, thanks.

Right before Halloween, I decided to dig into my stash and create “Monster Skin” nails – or, as my nephew would say, “Monsty Skin” nails. I started with Sally Hansen Double Duty Base & Top Coat. I them did a single coat of Sally Hansen Gem Crush “Cha-Ching!” – it still gives full coverage in one coat. I thought I would top it with a lime green crackle coat – Sally Hansen Crackle “Sage Smash” – but it was dried up! Finally, I chance to try out Julep Voila! Nail Polish Thinner! The bottle said 1-2 drops, but I I probably put in 10-20. I shook it and shook it and managed to thin enough around the brush to mostly a full coat on my nails. It kind of crackled…somewhat. I sealed the deal with Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

What came out on my nails, was not the same as what was on my nails. Instead of “Monsty Skin”, I got “Bloody Grinch”. I don’t hate it.

Fish Fry Nails

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Here fishy, fishy!

My father-in-law had his big annual fish fry last weekend and I decided to follow the theme with fishy nails.

I started with Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat and a single coat of Zoya “Remy”. I was gambling that one coat would be enough – and luckily, it was. To get my scales, I topped it with not one, but TWO thick coats of Sally Hansen Pearl Crush “Rainbow Fish”. I really glopped it on there. I finished with a thick coat of Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

“Rainbow Fish” did a great job of lightening up “Remy”. I tried not to get any of the disc glitters on my cuticles, but a few overlapped and I had to peel them off during clean-up.

I couldn’t wear this combo for very long – the edges of those disc glitters are a bit sharp – even with a goopy layer of top coat holding them down. I was starting to want to pick at my nails – that’s a big no-no!

The Infinity Gauntlet

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Come on, Infinity War is the biggest movie on the planet right now. How could I NOT do Infinity Gauntlet nails?

I put down a single coat of Glisten & Glow Ridge Filling Base Coat to get started. I get anxiety when I mismatch my polish to my base coat, but I’m using so many brands that I compromised.

My thumb holds the Time Stone – two coats of OPI “My Gecko Does Tricks” topped with Sinful Colors “Green Ocean”.

My index finger became the Power Stone – two coats of Julep “Paulette” topped with Zoya “Monet”.

The Space Stone resided on my middle finger – two coats of Sinful Colors “Prized Plume” topped with Sally Hansen “Family Jewels”.

My ring finger became the Reality Stone – two coats of Formula X “Boundless Berry” topped with Sinful Colors “Unwrap Me”.

My pinkie got the Soul Stone – Sinful Colors “Courtney Orange” topped with SpaRitual “Citrine Luminary”.

I finished off the Gauntlet with gold metal studs, sealed with Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

Alas, I just have five fingers on each hands, so I had to hold the Mind Stone. Oh, and I don’t have a Mind Stone, so I used a peach from our peach tree in the backyard. It was eaten shortly after this picture was taken.

What other movie manicures should I try?

Lippie Love

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I wasn’t in Ulta to buy something for myself. I was there to look for Sally Hansen Nail Art Markers for my friend, Starr (sometimes you gotta get punk on the subway). I found those easily, but I was lured in by the NYX gift with purchase…and one more 20% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket.

With a $20 purchase of NYX products, you’d get a pleather lip-shaped bag, with three free products: NYX Matte Liquid Liner in “Black”; NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in “Copenhagen” (so goth!); and NYX Suede Lip Liner in “Copenhagen”. That’s a great gift with purchase. I decided to try a bunch of new products, for better or for worse. I got a NYX Precision Brow Pencil in “Soft Brown” ($9.99) – I’d previously used the Micro Brow Pencil and I thought this would be as good, but I don’t like it as much. It is hard to use and makes my brows look fuzzy. Then I grabbed NYX Slip Tease Full Color Lip Oil ($6.99), which felt great on my lips…but got on EVERYTHING. It did not last through a Freddy’s Steakburger. It also bled like a mofo. Lastly, I tried the NYX Powder Puff Lippie in “Moody” ($8.49). This one also went on soft as velvet. It transfered a little, but not too bad. It didn’t bleed, but didn’t apply with a crisp line either. It also lasted most of they day – super pigmented. This is the only product I’d buy again.

So, after this last shopping spree, only $132.01 to go until Platinum. Lily needs a haircut…

Astros Nails

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

I can be a baseball fan, just for one day.

There are few sports as boring as baseball, but as soon as I found out that my son’s Junior High School Band was invited to play the National Anthem, I got uncharacteristically excited. I don’t own any Astros gear, but I do have fingernails…

I don’t normally mix brands like this, but it was necessary to get the colors just right. I started with Sally Hansen Double Duty Base & Top Coat, followed by two coats of the brightest orange I own – Sally Hansen “Sweet Nectar”. I then painted a swipe pattern that my daughter had done on her own nails last week. I used Julep “Brigitte” for the white and Julep “Dyani” for the blue. I painted the swipes freehand, with the nail polish brush – so they are far from perfect. I wanted some stars, so I then topped with Sinful Colors “Star Studded”. The finishing touch was Glisten & Glow Top Coat.

Since I used the brushes from the nail polish bottle, there was far too much polish pooling in the edges, by my skin. Oh well.

I was gonna hold a baseball in the pic, but I couldn’t find one around the house. I used my mom’s opal egg instead. This might be my new nail pic thingy.
