That Lil

/

After doing my daughter Lily’s nails for Field Day next week (they had to be YELLOW to match her Field Day shirt), I let her take the wheel and pick out something for my nails. She carefully picked out two of her NYX polishes (from last Xmas) – a bright pink creme and a shimmery fuchsia. (On a side note, I HATE that these tiny polishes do not have names on the bottle. In fact, they likely do not have names at all. The OCD in me cannot handle it.) She demanded that I alternate nails and then do contrasting dots…that Lil has an eye for design!

After Sally Hansen Diamond Shine for a base coat, I followed Lil’s directions. Slowly, I dotted my nails. I tried to keep them neat and geometric, but they’re not perfect. I finished with “HK Girl”. My left hand only smeared a bit on the pinky…but my right hand looks horror show – like a rain of pink and fuchsia comets. SIGH. Patience was never my strong suit.

Maybe I should let Lil pick all my polish looks?

Southwestern Mermaid

/

It’s Easter…but I was already sick of pastels, so I just went with something I’d had in mind with a while.

When I first got Nicole by OPI “Pick of the Glitter”, I tried it over a nude. I decided to try it over a turquoise to bring out the turquoise glitter. After Sinful Colors Base Coat, I did two thin coats of Sally Hansen “Marine Scene”. “Marine Scene” is one of my older polishes – not quite a decade old, but quite a while, since it’s only half full. My husband really likes this polish and just rolled his eyes at me when I started to put glitter on top of it. HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND.

I topped with “HK Girl” for a smooth finish.

The turquoise glitter is a bit darker than “Marine Scene”, so it stands out. I like this a lot – it feels very Southwestern Mermaid.

Midnight Jewels

/

Maybelline ColorShow “Midnight Blue” is an inky dark blue. At a glance, it appears black, but it’s blue enough that I was able to photograph the blue easily. When I bought it a few weeks ago, I was thinking that it was a jelly and I would get sheer coverage. I was wrong, it’s a creme – full coverage in two coats.

To jazz it up, I added Sally Hansen “Family Jewels” on my thumb and ring finger. “HK Girl” sealed the deal.

I wasn’t sure what to use for the base coat, so I just used the usual – Sinful Colors Base Coat. I’m definitely expecting stained nails after taking it off though. The price of beauty…

Slutty Pumpkin

/

If you’re a fan of How I Met Your Mother, you know all about Slutty Pumpkin. For some reason, Slutty Pumpkin is all I can think of when I look at this glittery Halloween paint job.

After Sinful Colors Base Coat, I painted two coats of Sally Hansen “Sweet Nectar”. By itself, it’s totally traffic cone orange – but it’s much more festive after a thick coat of Sinful Colors “Splatter Spell”. I was hoping that the orange shards would be…oranger? They are more gold than orange. I topped with a coat of “HK Girl”.

Okay enjoy, because it will probably be another year before I rock orange nail polish again…

Do You Like Fishsticks?

/

I LOVE fishsticks. But that’s a story for another time.

Sally Hansen Pearl Crush “Rainbow Fish” is an all around frustrating polish. It was thickish and goopy out on the brush, but I had a hard time building the color on my nail. I waned it to be as blue as the polish in the bottle, but I was only able to get a bluey opal color. (This is two thick coats.) The shimmer was unforgiving of any polish mistakes and the opalescent glitters gravitated towards the edges of my nails. The base coat – Sally Hansen Diamond Shine – might have been too smooth. Luckily, “HK Girl” hid my worst flubs.

Once on my nails, it was really frustrating to get a good pic. I literally took 50 or so pictures before I just said, “Fuck it.” All my whining aside, I REALLY like the way the polish looks. It’s like fish scales and slime stuck on my fingernails after gutting a fish – but in a beautiful and not at all macabre way.

Ursula, The Sea Witch

/

Wearing Sally Hansen Pearl Crush “Clam Digger” – I feel like Ursula, the Sea Witch!

There’s just something about purple/green shifting polishes that I cannot resist – I have several. But there was just something about “Clam Digger”, with those iridescent mother of pearl glitter discs. They’re large and stick up at weird angles – but there were a lot of them. I ended up having to just dab them on, since they tended to end up on the tips of my nail. At least I didn’t have to go fishing for them.

This is just 2 coats. I used Sally Hansen Diamond Shine for the base coat and “HK Girl” for the top coat. “HK Girl” did a great job of smoothing out the edge of the discs and hiding my dab marks.

Oh Walgreens, How I Love Thee!

/

I can’t let a Walgreen’s 99 cent Sinful Colors sale go without stopping in and grabbing a few. I started with Sinful Colors Base Coat, which was NOT on sale. I was conservative – only picking 4 colors: “All About You”, a gold and copper glitter; NEON “The Bright Thing”, because I want my nails to look like highlighters; “Hazed”, a Limited Edition puce demi-matte; and “Pride”, a rainbow glitter.

I also came upon some $1.49 clearance polishes – Sally Hansen Pearl Crush “Clam Digger” and “Rainbow Fish”. I almost bought one at Target this past weekend, on clearance for $2.74 – I’m glad I waited.

I also did some super secret birthday present shopping…shhhhhh!

Sparkling Water

/

How unexpected – I thought that Sally Hansen Triple Shine “Sparkling Water” was a microglitter, but it’s a shimmer – sparkling turquoise water with a violet shimmer. It might even be sheer enough for jelly experiments. “Sparkling Water” would also go well with “Mermaid’s Tale” – Sally really does do turquoise the best!

This is two coats of “Sparkling Water” with Orly Bonder and “HK Girl”. It’s a good, smooth polish, even though I suspect the bottle is rather old, since it was on clearance at Walgreen’s. I don’t own many Triple Shines, but I might start grabbing more on clearance – even though they’re one of Sally’s cheapest polishes, they do well.

Ulta Adventure

/

Oh the disappointment when one opens up an online order and one of the items is damaged! I ordered 2 NYX AVANT POP palettes (BOGO50%off) – and the “Art Throb” palette was shattered. Luckily, the “Surreal My Heart Palette” was in fine shape. I also ordered a clearance Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in “Woodstock” (hot pink!) for $10 and 2 Palladio lip stains“rose” and “mocha”.

Because my order was over $40, I got the NYX Beauty Break Set, with Love in Paris Palette in “Merci Beaucoup”, Doll Eye Mascara in “Extreme Jet Black”, Butter Gloss in “Maple Blondie” and Slide On, Glide On, Stay On & Definitely a Turn On Waterproof Extreme Shine Eye Liner. (I like this set better than what I actually paid for.) For samples, I chose skincare and got CoTZ Face Sunscreen and Garnier Nourishing Cleansing Oil.

/

This morning, I went on an adventure to replace the shattered palette and use my $10 off ANYTHING coupon to get another Urban Decay Naked Skin BB Cream. The Copperwood Ulta didn’t have the paletter OR the BB Cream. I did pick up another Zoya Remove+.

The Willowbrook Ulta did have the NYX palette – phew.

Lily also begged for Sally Hansen “Sweet Nectar”. It was 79 cents on the clearance aisle, so why not. It’s sickeningly orange, but you never know when it will come in handy.

It’s not Saturday without a quick trip to Bath & Body Works. I’d been jonesing to experience the Semi Annual Sale in person, since I’ve been ordering online.

It was a fairly conservative trip – 2 50% off 3-wick candles, plus a metal candle holder. Just 5 50% off Hand Soaps – I just needed enough to use my $10 off $40 coupon.

I need a nap – I am plumb tuckered out.

Sinful Binge

/

Father, it’s been 5 weeks since my last Sinful Colors 99 cent sale purchase.

I didn’t even know there was a sale this week, until I caught a whiff of it on Instagram. I binged and made trips to 2 different Walgreen’s to fulfill my urges. On my lunch trip, I got Sinful Colors “Baila Baila”, “Copper Pot”, “Keira Blu”, “Otaku Anime”, “Fierce Fiesta”, “Endless Blue”, and “Mamasita”. I also got Sally Hansen Triple Shine in “Sparkling Water” for $1.29. I even had $1 in Balance Rewards.

I made a second stop to look for some red jellies that I looked up online – I got “Go Go Girl” and “Ruby Glisten” – because I totally need more red polish.

I can stop any time. Really.
