July Birchbox – One-Two-Punch

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Another month, another curated box. The theme is “One-Two-Punch” – quick solution products.

I’ll be honest, I picked the box purely for Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser – I got in a Birchbox last summer and I really liked it.

Also in this month’s box: Juliette Has a Gun Anyway (citrusy and clean); Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion; MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Skin (I have a full size – maybe I should revisit it now that my skin is healthier); and Beautaniq Beauty Blush Serum.

An interesting box and my skin is looking forward to trying some new products.

July Ipsy Bag – Over Easy

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Forget this month’s ipsy bag for a moment…and LOOK at the mailer. This month’s gold mailer has me SHOOK.  I’ve been getting ipsy for 3+ years and this is the first time there’s been a change to that familiar fuchsia mailer. I ain’t even mad though.

That gold mailer almost distracted me from this month’s makeup bag…oh my. I don’t even know what to think about that sad little egg, Gudetama. I don’t hate it…but…I’m not in love.

I’m not overly excited about the products in this month’s bag either – they’re not bad products, but not stuff I “need”. I’m thinking the first thing I’ll sample is the tarte Rainforest of the Sea deep dive cleansing gel. I really liked their FRXXXTION stick. Also inside this month’s box: Beau Gâchis Illuminating Brush; BRTC Jasmine Waterful Sleeping Mask (TONIGHT); Japonesque Velvet Touch Primer at first glance, I thought this was the Smashbox primer); and OFRA eyeshadow in “Gold Rush”.

There was also a rather thick booklet from ipsy, promoting their new ipsy cash program. I’m all for cash back on my purchases, but I don’t know if I can divert my purchases from Ulta and Sephora – I gots to get my points.

July Julep Maven Box – Neon Nights

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Even though my Julep box was there waiting for me when I got back from vacation, I got distracted by all the goodies I purchased…

July’s theme is “Neon Nights”, and offered a selection of bright summer colors. I chose Bombshell “Hayat”blazing hibiscus creme – and Boho Glam “Nadine”tangy persimmon creme (to match my persimmon tree). I also chose the new So Plush Lip Gloss in “werk” – I cannot resist trying Julep’s lip products, even though they go bad before I can ever use them up. Even though I KNOW that it’s because they’re not loaded with nasty preservatives, it kind of irks me that they go rancid after less than a year. I also used Jules to get Palm Tree Nail Decals – so summery!

No candy this month, which is smart given the weather. Instead, I got another sheet of metallic temporary tattoos. I’m thinking Lily will get these.

Oops! I left town without finishing my homework…

Without further ado, here’s June box/bag, “Your Summer Starters”: Benefit The POREfessional (so much of this stuff, but it works); OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil (smells so good); First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer (excited to try); Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel (ooooh, more coconut); Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Liquid in “K-Dub” (This is SO my color, well…my old car’s color; Also, I used the alias ‘L-Dub’ on another blog years ago); and Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium (nope).

A great box, cannot wait to use more of the products!

I wish I could use the 50 point bonus cards on online orders – I hardly EVER go into the store.

If you haven’t signed up yet, do so now. This is by far the best subscription box I get every month. Sephora Play is only $10/month. You can sign up at sephora.com/play.

June Ipsy Bag – Volume Up

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Ooooh…look at those lips. So why aren’t there any lip products in my bag this month?

Let’s see…I got a Beaute Basics Travel Face Blender in Light Pink; Peek Beauty Multiuse Black Primer (I am scared and intrigued by this product at the same time; how do I end up NOT looking like I got punched in the eye?); PÜR Mini Fully Charged Magenetic Mascara (another scary product – it’s literally supposed to be magnets); Trust Fund Beauty Nail Polish in “What’s a Budget” (sea-foam blue); and Delectable by Cake Beauty Coconut & Cream Triple Moisture Body Lotion.

A fun bag for summer – with a few products I’ll have to get brave enough to try.

June Birchbox – Face the Day

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Month after month, Birchbox’s curated boxes are the ones I gravitate towards. I don’t know if it’s because I like to know what’s coming or if it’s because the curated boxes are well put together, er…curated. I don’t know why I like what I like…I just do.

June’s curated box is “Face the Day” and includes one of my favorite mascaras – Benefit Roller Lash. It is the only mascara that does exactly what it says it does…that I’ve tried, anyway. Also in this month’s box: Davines SU Hair & Body Wash (I’m skeptical of shampoo/body washes, although this one is specifically formulated for use after sun exposure…so it might make sense); Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++ (ooooh, gonna try this tomorrow); Davroe Ends Repair; and Mellow Cosmetics Liquid Lip Paint in “Tehran” (never heard of the brand, but I’m game).

Like I said, good box, huh?

June Julep Maven Box – Bask in the Heat

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Let me just say, I fucking HATE the summertime. There is NO part of me that is excited to “bask in the heat”. It’s the first week of June and it’s already 95 degrees. Killlllll meeeeeeeeee.

Even though the weather has me grouchy, I can still crack a smile for my Julep box. I went ahead and selected Julep’s new mascara – With a Twist Lash Boosting Bamboo Mascara in “Jet Black”. It’s a decent mascara, very similar to Length Matters, which I love…but I didn’t see any remarkable difference in volume after twisting the brush. I’ll keep practicing…

For polishes, I chose Boho Glam “Marisol”golden amber metallic – and Classic with a Twist “Jaydra”Tuscan rose sheer holographic. I don’t know what it is, but I’ve really been digging gold polish. Oh, and I also used Jules to get another love your bare face Detoxifying Cleansing Stick – I love this thing with my Clarisonic.

…and an Atomic Fireball. Fuck you. Yup, grouchy again.

Sephora Play! May 2017 – The Rising Stars

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Oh Sephora, you are full of surprises. No flamingos, but surprises.

Instead of a drawstring bag, they included a clear plastic snap pouch this month. I have no idea what I’m going to do with it. Maybe I can throw it in my pool bag?

I’m most excited to try the sample of belif Hungarian Water Essence – I’m a big fan of their Aqua Bomb. Also in this month’s box: rahua Omega 9 Hair Mask; Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil (I’m not sold on cleansing oils); tre’StiQue Mini Highlight Stick in “Maldives Luminescent”; Nudestix Magnetic Matte Lip Color in “GreyStone”; and Tocca “Stella” (blood orange and lily – I’d actually wear this one!).

Not sure about all the sticks this month, but the scent makes up for it.

If you haven’t signed up yet, you’re crazy. This is by far the best subscription box I get every month. Sephora Play is only $10/month. You can sign up at sephora.com/play.

May Ipsy Bag – Summer Friday

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Ooooooooh! More pink flamingos!

First off, you know I have those same glitter flamingo sunglasses – I bought them at Party City. I’ve never thought about putting them on a pineapple though.

…And then I saw the flamingo on Jelly Pong Pong Supercharged Super Intense Eyeshadow Duo in “Electric” (Yes, I get excited about a random brand of eye shadow just because there is a flamingo on the packaging). Also in this month’s super cute, clear, ice cream-covered bag: Urban Decay Cosmetics Afterglow 8-Hour Highlighter in “Sin” (never tried their highlighters before); Pixi by Petra Endless Silky Eye Pen in “BlackNoir”; Hey Honey Besame Mucho Lip Balm; and Luxie Beauty Luxie Dreamcatcher Precision Foundation Brush 660 (not a big fan of foundation brushes, but I’ll give it a spin).

Ipsy is getting their groove back!

May Birchbox – Low Effort High Impact

A post shared by Lara (@knobbygirl) on

Pink Flamingos!

For real, the first thing I noticed in this month’s Birchbox was The Beauty Crop Fabulous Flocking Lashes Mascara. SO cute.

Also in this month’s “Low Effort High Impact” box: CLEAN Reserve Rain Reserve Blend Eau de Parfum (it actually DOES smell like rain); COOLA Mineral SPF 30 Daydream Makeup Primer (love me some COOLA); PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray; and Vita Liberata Fabulous Self Tanning Gradual Lotion (NOPE).

I totally spaced and didn’t click on the sample choice email for April. Oops, I get what I get and I don’t have a fit. Not a bad box, except for the self tanner.
