Unicorn Poop

/

Doesn’t it look like I stuck my fingertips in Unicorn poop?

Don’t act like you wouldn’t do it. If you came across a glittery pile of feces from a mystical creature, wouldn’t you poke around in it…just to SAY you did?

But who needs Unicorn poop when you have Zoya “Bar” Magical Pixie Dust? I wanted to wear Julep “India” one more day, but I was starting to get major edge wear. “Bar” to the rescue! It literally took 90 seconds to do a quick gradient on the tips and breathe life into my fingertips.

I hope I don’t have nightmares about Unicorn poop…

Cerulean City

/

Take me down to Cerulean City, where the grass is green and Pokémon are pretty…

You may be asking yourself, how does someone as cultured cluttered and sophisticated sophomoric as myself know about Cerulean City. When my husband and I originally shacked up together, he was a bartender. Most days before work, he watched Pokémon…so I watched Pokémon. This was before we could afford more than one TV and before we stopped being nice to each other…so as hard as I tried to ignore it, I subliminally learned a lot about Pokémon.

Flash forward 14 years and two kids later…he’s still playing Pokémon…and so is my son. I just smile and nod.

ANYWAY…Julep “India” is a Boho Glam from August’s “The Wanderlust Collection.” Even though Julep describes “India” as freshwater blue shimmer, it’s  the perfect cerulean blue.

“India” didn’t like the Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat – it did not want to stick. I managed to smooth it out and it looked great by the second coat. A shiny top coat is a must – Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat is what I used. Next time, I’ll try a different base coat.

August Julep Maven Box – The Wanderlust Collection

/

There’s nothing like coming home to a HUGE stack of boxes and mail after being gone a mere 48 hours…

2 zulily boxes, a book from Birchbox, an Ulta ad…and FINALLY, my August Julep Maven Box.

I was supposed to be excited that my Julep dropped DHL and switched to Fed Ex Smartpost, but I didn’t get my box any faster than I had been getting them before.

/

August’s theme is “The Wanderlust Collection.” I customized my box again this month. I picked a “Smoky Taupe Shimmer” Gel Eye Glider, Boho Glam “India”Freshwater Blue Shimmer – and Bombshell “Neha”Sari Magenta Shimmer.

There was NOTHING else in my box – no card describing the collection, no coupon codes, NO CANDY. I’m sorry about complaining about the Tootsie Rolls…Julep, give me my candy! My BFF also reported nothing else in her box. WTF?

After a weekend fishing, I’ll definitely be trying “India” tonight!

Pink Flaming-toes

/

Ba DUM dum…

I know, I know, it’s a really bad pun.

I just wanted to show off Julep “Vicki” next to some REAL pink plastic flamingos. I used Sally Hansen “Fruit-Ta-Ta” as an accent on my middle toes. Pretty good match, huh?

I actually just took “Vicki” off my toenails. It was too thick around the edges and the Sally Hansen Diamond Flash left ragged edges. I couldn’t go on vacation with my toenails looking all raggedy. I went back to Zoya “Sooki”, my new favorite toenail polish.

Pink Flamingos

/

If Babs Johnson was going to pick a nail polish – it would be Julep “Vicki”!

Julep wasn’t kidding when they “Vicki” as pink flamingo crème – my fingers look like plastic yard flamingos! “Vicki” is a hard polish to work with. It is streaky in one coat, but two coats is too much and it pools in the cracks between my nail and finger. I was a good girl and started with Julep Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat, but it is almost empty, so it was goopy. I’m going to try to get one last use out of it, but not sure I have enough for all 10 nails. After two coats, I topped with Sally Hansen Diamond Flash, which I needed, because my washing machine was in the process of breaking down while I was painting my nails and I unexpectedly had to get sopping jeans out of the machine shortly after I painted them.

I like the concept of plastic pink flamingo nails, but the color is too bright for me – my nails are almost neon. Next time, I’ll try “Vicki” with a glitter or other special effect top coat to tone it down a bit.

Lady Deathstrike

/

I’ve decided that these fingernails make me Lady Deathstrike. Oh, you didn’t know that in addition to being an amateur manicurist, soap hoarder and makeup junkie…that I’m also a nerd? And a giant dork.

Julep “Braiden” is one of the new polishes that I received in July’s box – The Poolside Collection. Julep describes it as graphite stardust (textured matte glitter), but I guess adamantium is probably trademarked or something.

No base coat or top coat – just 2 coats of “Braiden”. It dried within seconds and only has minimal edge wear after 24 hours. Great formula!

Between Julep’s Stardust and Zoya’s Pixie Dust, I’m starting to really like these textured polishes.

July Julep Maven Box – The Poolside Collection

/

Finally…GOSH! At least Julep was nice enough to send me an email letting me know that my box had shipped late…

July brings us “The Poolside Collection”. It turns out that I did sign up for My Maven Customized boxes last month, so I chose the “Classic with a Twist” box, so I could get “Bare Body Milk”. It smells great and is cooling to the skin. I kept “Vicki”Pink flamingo crème – but swapped out “Kelsey” for “It Girl” “Braiden” – Graphite stardust (textured matte glitter). The “treat” was a few tootsie rolls. Come on, Julep – at least Pixi Stix are REAL candy!

No add-ons or mystery items this month…

I’m so excited to try the flamingo polish!

How to Ruin your Carpet

/

So I’ve heard about this happening with Julep polishes, but I never thought it would happen to me…

I didn’t realize that the neck of the bottle had broken in shipping. As I attempted to pop the overcap off of Julep “Sabrina” to swatch the top, it snapped off in my hand….and sprayed bright orange polish all over my leg and bedroom floor. SONOFABEEEEETCH!

So pouring half a bottle of polish remover on my carpet seemed to do the trick – I was able to get the polish out, but there is a faint orange tinge if you really look close.

Be warned! Check your Juleps…and open over a table or put a tarp down or go outside or something. At least this was a polish I had only paid $2 for….

America, Fuck YEAH

/

Don’t these patriotic nails just say, “America, Fuck YEAH!”???

I’ve been waiting at least 6 months for the 4th of July. Julep “America” isn’t just an everyday polish…

I started with Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat. Rimmel “Blue Eyed Girl” for my blue, Julep “Bunny” for my white and Zoya “Sooki” for my red. I used just a single coat of each. I topped each nail with Julep “America” and then finished with Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat. The Revlon dried fairly quickly and didn’t bubble or crack…good news!

/

My BFF also did “America, Fuck YEAH!” nails.

Her blue was Sinful Colors “Ciao Bella”, her white was Julep “Bunny” and her red was Sinful Colors “Gogo Girl”. She also topped with Julep “America” – I got a dupe in my Cupid Mystery Box and gave it to her.

We’re twinkies!

Oil Slick Tar Ball

/

This weekend was our 5th annual Cuzzins Camp, where our family and friends get the kids together at LaLa’s in East Texas to enjoy a weekend of farm living and each other. This year, I couldn’t resist bringing nail polish for a night time activity for the girls. NOTE TO SELF: Bring more polish next time. Lily was insulted that I only brought 6 polishes to choose from!

Unlike Lily – who always wants to paint herself and make a mess, CK asked me to paint her fingers and toes. I was honored! She chose Julep “Jeanne”, “Estelle” and “Oscar” for her fingers. She chose “Caitlin” and “Tatiana” for her toes (not pictured). Lily slopped “Caitlin”, “Yumi” and “Tatiana” all over her feet, and had started on her fingers when I made her stop. She was paying a little too much attention to The Lego Movie and I did not want polish all over the kitchen. I put Sally Hansen “Diamond Shine” on her toes and sent her packing…

/

For myself, I chose Julep “Estelle”, originally from the Galaxy Mystery Box, but I got it in Golden Ticket Mystery Box #2. Julep’s site describes it as midnight black with holographic shimmer, but doesn’t mentioned that it is a lightly textured polish. It isn’t quite as rough as their stardust finish, but I wasn’t expecting it. As first, I freaked out that there was some weird chemical reaction between the Sally Hansen “Diamond Shine” and “Estelle” – it took over 30 minutes to fully dry! A quick Google confirmed that the polish is supposed to be textured – phew! even so, I am not thinking that “Diamond Shine” is nearly as good as “Diamond Flash”. I’ll have to try it with a few more polishes to be sure…

When my nails were wet, I thought they looked like an oil slick, but as they dried – they totally reminded me of tar balls. We are definitely used to seeing tar balls in Galveston! I don’t hate this polish, but it’s definitely not summery.
